Is it possible to amplify the positive impact of renewable energy? That may be one of the most frequent questions clean energy buyers ask themselves. Of course, choosing renewables over fossil energy is already a positive and crucial action. But can we go further and spark even more tangible change?

To answer that question, Ecohz has chosen to cover its own electricity consumption with Guarantees of Origin (GOs) carrying the EKOenergy label — a global non-profit ecolabel for renewable electricity and gas. EKOenergy ensures that the clean energy meets additional sustainability criteria and raises funds for new renewable energy projects in fragile countries.

How does EKOenergy work?

The label goes further than directives and government regulations in minimising the environmental impact of renewables and boosting their social co-benefits.

The electricity sold with EKOenergy:

  • Comes from renewable sources, including hydro, wind, solar, biomass, or geothermal energy.
  • Is produced in installations located outside protected nature areas and important bird areas.
  • Follows strict sustainability requirements for hydropower production, such as safeguarding a continuous water flow, reducing the impact on fish migration, and leaving suitable habitats for aquatic species.

EKOenergy also has two separate funds that contribute to enhancing the positive impact of clean energy. The EKOenergy Environmental Fund supports environmental mitigation projects such as restoring rivers, building fish passages, and reviving spawning grounds. Meanwhile, the EKOenergy Climate Fund helps finance new renewable energy projects in low- and middle-income countries.

For every megawatt hour of EKOenergy sold, 10 euro cents are allocated to the Climate Fund, which go to financing projects that focus on social and ecological benefits, such as installing solar panels in fishing communities in Kenya or electrifying small-scale irrigation systems in Gambia. In 2023, EKOenergy granted a total of EUR 1.2 million to 21 projects in 15 countries.

Why have our experts chosen EKOenergy?

EKOenergy keeps us inspired and helps us raise the bar for our own renewable energy procurement. That is why Ecohz not only covers its electricity consumption with EKOenergy, but also purchases labelled GOs for its employees’ personal usage. And this is how our team feels about it:

“At Ecohz, we are always looking for ways to maximise the impact of voluntary renewable energy purchases, and EKOenergy is an excellent tool for buyers aiming to go above and beyond in their decarbonisation commitments. Using EKOenergy-labelled GOs to cover the personal electricity consumption of our team is a way to put our money where our mouth is and support meaningful initiatives that multiply the benefits of choosing clean energy.”

Ivar Munch Clausen, Director of Business Development

“What I like the most about EKOenergy is their global vision. They enable companies to amplify their impact anywhere in the world and are the only ecolabel with a Climate Fund that supports clean electricity projects in low-income countries. Building more renewable energy is essential, but bringing it to those who do not have access to energy makes it even more meaningful.”

Janne Svendsen Moe, Chief Marketing Officer

“EKOenergy is an example of determined climate action and how it can spark inspiring stories. Take the Climate Fund, for instance. The dedication that goes into selecting projects and the impact the Fund delivers is truly heartening. I always look forward to the next dispatch of their Climate Stories, knowing that our contribution as a company has been part of that journey.”
