Air Liquide, a world leader in gases, technologies, and services for industry and healthcare, is working to reduce the emissions of imported goods into the European Union in line with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). To support this effort, Ecohz provided energy policy advisory services on reporting obligations, carbon taxation, and regulatory requirements for companies importing energy carriers into the EU single market.

After defining the key research topics in collaboration with Air Liquide’s sustainability team, Ecohz’s Net Zero Advisors conducted a regulatory analysis addressing key questions related to the import and the production of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs).

The analysis covered how CBAM harmonises the costs of European-made and imported products by pricing embedded carbon emissions and how the policy helps avoid carbon leakage. It also explained the logic behind the regulation, the relevant actors, methods to reduce taxable emissions, and the administrative requirements for submitting CBAM declarations.

In addition, the study detailed the principles of mass balancing for RFNBOs in the EU, in line with the framework of the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC).

Further, to assist Air Liquide in procuring renewables globally, Ecohz advisors examined the effectiveness of International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs) in preventing the double counting of renewable electricity in India, providing evidence of how the system supports robust claims of clean energy use outside Europe and North America.

Air Liquide is committed to developing new sustainable solutions for industry and accelerating the energy transition. Ecohz is proud to support the company in these efforts.
