More renewable energy needs to be produced and consumed to help stop global warming. This is a challenge for everybody, especially for companies that use significant amounts of electricity. By using and producing renewable energy, companies can act on new business opportunities, meet expectations from investors, consumers and authorities, and improve their sustainability ratings.
ECOHZ provides solutions that cover many regions of the world. You can document the origin of your energy consumption globally with Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs); Guarantees of Origin in Europe, RECs in North America and I-RECs in a growing number of countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Guarantees of origin (GOs)
To document and report that energy you consume in Europe comes from renewable energy sources, you must buy Guarantees of Origin. The system of Guarantees of Origin complies with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Scope 2 Guidance and is an effective and recognised tool to reduce your greenhouse gas emissions and improve your sustainability rating.
Renewable energy certificates (RECs)
To document and report that the energy you consume in North America comes from renewable energy sources, you must buy Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). RECs, a voluntary system, comply with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Each REC represents proof that 1 MWh of renewable energy has been produced and embodies the related environmental benefits.
International REC standard (I-RECs)
To document and report that energy you consume outside of Europe and North America comes from renewable energy sources you can buy International RECs (I-RECs). I-REC is a new global standard being introduced in a growing number of countries where no similar scheme exists. I-REC builds on best practice from the North American REC market and Europe’s Guarantees of Origin system, and has strong stakeholder support. I-REC is recognised by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Scope 2 Guidance as a tool to document electricity consumption from renewable energy sources.
Create renewable energy while consuming renewable energy with GO²
International accounting framework, such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Scope 2 and initiatives as RE100, that work with the world’s most influential companies committing to 100% renewable power, are encouraging greater action than buying renewable energy. A new, innovative concept called GO² combines the purchase of renewable energy with Guarantees of Origin (GOs) with top financing to named renewable projects. GO² is an accessible, low risk entry for companies to engage and quickly unlock renewable energy projects and bring more renewable energy to the grid – GO² provides additionality.
