Renewable Energy Directive
3/19/2012
The EU Renewable Energy Directive came into force in June 2009 as part of the EU energy and climate change package. The Directive confirms that Guarantees of Origin have the sole function of proving that the energy was produced from renewable sources.
The Directive (2009/28/EC) sets ambitious targets for all member states, such that the EU will reach a 20% share of energy from renewable sources by 2020 and a 10% share of renewable energy specifically in the transport sector. The Directive is relevant to the EEA agreement and will therefore also include Norway, which has the greatest renewable electricity generation resources in Europe.
The flexible mechanisms introduced new possibilities for cross-border cooperation to realise new renewable energy projects and reach national targets in a more cost-effective way.
